Learn how to properly wash your car at home by following the recommended washing process. We also discuss which HOCUS car care products are best to use at each washing stage.

What do you need for washing a car?
To wash a car properly at home, you don't need to have a full set of equipment. The most important thing is to choose the right car care products, keep them clean, and use them separately.
-
Car wash bucket: intended for water with car shampoo. It is recommended to choose a bucket with dirt separation grids, which help reduce the flow of dirt onto the washing mitt. During washing, regularly rinse the mitt with clean running water.
-
Car shampoo: choose a shampoo specially designed for car bodies.
-
Soft washing mitt: intended for gentle body cleaning. A quality washing mitt helps safely remove dirt and reduce the risk of surface scratching.
-
Wheel cleaner: use products specially designed for wheels to clean them. This will prevent brake dust and other abrasive dirt from getting onto the car body.
-
Water hose or high-pressure washer: helps remove dirt and thoroughly rinse the car.
-
Microfiber drying towel: absorbs moisture well, allows you to gently dry the car, and reduces the likelihood of water spots forming.
-
Additionally – gloss enhancer: used after washing to give the car body additional shine and refresh its appearance.

Preparing to wash the car
Before you start washing the car, it is important to choose a suitable location and prepare all the necessary products. It is best to wash the car in the shade, when its body and wheels are not heated by the sun or driving.
Cleaning products dry faster on hot surfaces, which can leave water spots, shampoo, or other product residue. For this reason, it is recommended to avoid washing the car in direct sunlight.
Before you start washing
Make sure the car body and wheels have cooled down. Prepare a wash bucket, car shampoo, washing mitt, wheel cleaner, and microfiber drying towel.
During washing, do not allow the cleaning products to dry on the car surface. Follow the usage time indicated on the product packaging.
Where can you wash the car?
Wash the car only in designated or locally permitted areas where proper drainage is ensured. This will help you avoid polluting the environment with cleaning products and residue washed off the car.

Step one: cleaning the wheels and tires
Wheels and tires are among the dirtiest parts of the car. Brake dust, road grime, and other dirt accumulate on them. Therefore, it is recommended to start washing the car with the wheels, so that during their cleaning, dirt does not get onto the already washed body.
1. Initial rinse
Rinse the wheel, tire, and wheel arch with a stream of water to remove dirt and other easily removable grime.
2. Using wheel cleaner
Spray HOCUS wheel cleaner evenly over the cooled wheel surface. Leave the product to work for 3–5 minutes, so it can help remove brake dust and metal particles. Do not allow the cleaner to dry on the surface.
3. Thorough cleaning
Using a soft wheel brush, clean the wheel surface, including the spokes and hard-to-reach areas. It is recommended to use a separate tire brush with stiffer bristles for the tire sidewalls.
4. Final rinse
Thoroughly rinse the wheel, tire, and wheel arch so that no cleaning product or dirt residue remains. Repeat the same steps with the remaining wheels.
Why is it important to use separate cleaning tools?
Brake dust contains fine metal particles that can scratch the car's paintwork. Therefore, brushes and other cleaning tools used for wheels should not be used to wash the body.

Step two: initial body wash
The purpose of the initial wash is to remove as much dirt, dust, and other grime as possible before you start washing the car by hand. This reduces the risk of scratching the body surface with the washing mitt.
1. Initial rinse
Rinse the entire car with a stream of water from the roof down. Pay special attention to the sills, bumpers, and lower door panels, where the most dirt usually accumulates.
2. Using active foam
If you use active foam or a pre-wash product, apply it evenly over the car body. Leave the product to work for as long as specified in the manufacturer's instructions. It is important not to allow the foam to dry on the surface.
3. Rinsing again
Rinse the car from the top down, removing the foam and loosened dirt. When using a high-pressure washer, maintain a safe distance from the body, especially around trim pieces, emblems, and rubber seals.

Step three: gentle hand washing of the body
After the initial rinse, you can start washing the body by hand. Fill the wash bucket with water, add HOCUS car shampoo according to the proportions indicated on the packaging, and use a soft washing mitt.
Wash the car from the top down, starting with the cleanest surfaces and gradually moving to the dirtier areas. Regularly rinse the washing mitt with clean running water to remove accumulated dirt.
1. Roof and windows
Start washing with the car roof and windows. These areas are usually less dirty than the lower body panels.
2. Hood, trunk, and upper body panels
Clean the surfaces with gentle, straight, slightly overlapping strokes. Do not press the washing mitt firmly against the body. Let the car shampoo and mitt remove the dirt.
3. Lower body panels
Wash the sills, lower door panels, and bumpers last, as these areas accumulate the most road grime and fine dirt. Rinse the mitt more frequently when washing these areas.
4. Rinsing during washing
It is recommended to rinse the car with warm or blown air

Step four: final rinse and drying
After you finish washing the car, thoroughly rinse the entire body with clean water from the top down to remove shampoo and dirt residue.
After rinsing, it is recommended to dry the car immediately. Water left on the body can dry and leave mineral deposits and water spots.
1. Use a clean microfiber towel
For drying the car, choose a large microfiber towel that absorbs moisture well. Gently press it against the body surface and move it slowly to absorb the accumulated water.
2. Avoid rubbing hard
There is no need to press or rub the surface hard when drying the car. Let the microfiber towel absorb the moisture. Once it becomes saturated with water, use a drier section or replace it with another clean towel.
3. Do not forget hard-to-reach areas
Open the car doors, trunk, and fuel tank cap. Dry the door jambs, edges, mirrors, and other areas where water can collect. This will prevent water from dripping onto the already cleaned body.

Step five: adding additional shine
After washing and drying the car, you can use additional body care products that help enhance the paint color and give the surface more shine.
HOCUS Gloss Max gloss enhancer is designed for painted car body surfaces. Use it on a clean car, following the instructions provided on the product packaging.
Important: before using a new car care product for the first time, test it on a small, less visible area of the surface and assess the result.
If the car body has scratches, has lost its shine, or needs long-term protection, a regular wash may not be enough. In such cases, it is recommended to choose professional car polishing or protective coating application, for which you can consult HOCUS specialists.
Most common car washing mistakes
Even when using quality car care products, improper washing habits can have a negative impact on the body's condition. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid:
-
Washing the car in direct sunlight: cleaning products dry faster on a heated body and can leave spots.
-
Using the same tools for wheels and the body: metal and dirt particles accumulated on the wheels can scratch the paintwork.
-
Improper washing sequence: washing the body first and only then the wheels can allow dirt to get onto the already cleaned surfaces.
-
Washing without an initial rinse: rubbing a dusty or dirty surface increases the risk of fine scratches.
-
Allowing cleaning products to dry: shampoo, active foam, and wheel cleaners should not dry on the car surface.
-
Using household detergents: dish detergents are not designed for the care of car paintwork and protective coatings.
-
Improper drying tools: old, rough, or dirty towels can damage the car surface.
Seasonal car care tips
Car care needs change depending on the time of year. Regular washing and properly chosen products help keep the car clean and protect its surfaces from environmental effects.
Winter
During winter, road salt, grime, and other dirt accumulate on the car. It is recommended to wash the lower body panels, wheel arches, and sills more frequently.
It is important to wash the car under conditions where water does not freeze on the surfaces, door seals, or locks.
Spring
After winter, salt, road grime, and other stubborn dirt may have accumulated on the car. It is recommended to perform a thorough pre-wash and only then proceed to hand-washing the bodywork.
Summer
During the warmer months, more attention should be paid to insect remains, bird droppings, and tree sap. It is recommended to remove these impurities as quickly as possible, as they can damage the paintwork if left for too long.
It is best to wash the car in the morning or evening, when the bodywork is not overheated.
Autumn
In autumn, moisture, leaves, and road dirt more frequently accumulate on the car. During washing, it is recommended to check and clean the areas around the door seals, trunk openings, and water drainage channels.
Washing the car in cold weather
At sub-zero temperatures, water may freeze in the door seals, locks, and other hard-to-reach places after washing. In such cases, it is recommended to choose professional car washing at a detailing center where proper washing and drying conditions are ensured.
